Mumbai Extremes

On 10th June 2016 Warmest Night ( as per Vagaries' available records) ever at Mumbai Colaba when the minimum recorded was 30.2c...

Previous: The Highest Minimum in Colaba was on May 9th  1991...when it was  30.1c at Colaba.
9th June, 2014..Scruz minimum record 30.2c, 

Min temp at Mumbai Santa Cruz was 30.3 c on 10 Jun 2007 
Scruz Highest Minimum was 29.7c, in 2010 26th May, 24th and 30th May 2015.
Hottest May, 41c on 12th May 1979.
Coldest May, 12th May 1985 20.2c.

Heat Wave and Heat Record for Mumbai Santa Cruz:
Friday 16th October 2015 turned out to the Hottest October day ever for Mumbai S'Cruz...Recording 38.6c (5.2c above normal).On Thursday, S'Cruz saw a high of 37.2c.
The previous hottest was on 23rd October 1972 when 37.9c was recorded.
Colaba   28.0c  warmest October Night.
Highest Ever Temperature :  
Colaba  :        41.6c  16th March 2011 ..So, Mumbai Colaba reaches its all time high for ANY MONTH today, 16th. March 2011. In its long history of weather observation, since 1st. Jan 1847, 41.6c is the highest recorded. Previous highest for any month till today was 40.6c on 19th. April 1955.

Coldest Day: Scruz:     22.2c (-9c)  8th Feb 2008, Scruz Max 22.8c on 26th Jan 1962
                         Colaba:    23.1  (-6c)   8th Feb 2008
On 8th Feb 2008,  Max at  Dahunu was 20c (-8c) and  Harnai 21c (-7c).
Lowest Ever: Scruz:    7.4c  22nd Jan 1962
                           Colaba:   11.7c  15th Jan 1935, 1st Feb 1929

Borivali National Park saw 6.5c ( Unofficial) and IIT 7.5c on 8th Feb 2008.

Since mid Jan., Mumbai is having a continuous trend of below normal temperatures. The cold spell of 25 days, has broken a few records in 2008.

Highest daily temp range at Santacruz : Recorded on 16th March 2011 : 

Min temp of 19.2 c followed by a high of 41.3 c .

The Highest Minimum in Scruz and Colaba were on May 9th  1991...when it was 28.6c at Scruz and 30.1c at Colaba.
Again, this was broken when on 3rd June 2014, Scruz saw a minimum temp of 29.6c...again 29.6c on 5th June 2014 !
Colaba was 29.5c on 3rd June 2014...and vagaries 29.9c.
9th June, 2014..Scruz minimum record 30.2c, colaba was 29.6c same date.

4th June 2016, Colaba recorded a min of 30.0c. and 29.8c on 30th May 2016.
Again, on 6th June 2016, Colaba saw a min temp of 29.8c, and Scruz 29.3c...

10th June 2014 saw a high of 38.0c at Scruz, a June record...Colaba was 34c..


  October 21st 2014:... Mumbai Colaba sees a Hot Monday Night...On Tuesday Morning (21st), the Minimum recorded was 28.4c..In all likelihood the highest minimum EVER in October....Vagaries also saw 28.4c as minimum...     



March 16th 2011 saw the widest range between day and night. Santacruz saw 22.1c ( 41.3 - 19.2c)  and Colaba 18.6 (41.6 - 23.0c).
March 3rd Morning Temp was 16.2 and day was 39.1c..variation works out to 22.9c for 24 hrs ended 5.30pm. 
Next morning saw a low of 15.6c (4th March 2013) so variation now becomes 23.5c for 24 hrs ended 8.30 am (4th morning).

February 2008: Severe cold in Mumbai
Mumbai Scruz coldest day was 7th feb 2008 @ 22.3c and Colaba 23.1c on 7th...8th feb 2008 scruz was 23.2c and colaba 23.4c.
8th Feb 2008 saw 8.5c at scruz and 8,6c on 9th feb .
colaba saw 11.8c on 9th feb 2008. Lowest 11.7c on 1929 ,1935.

- Santacruz recorded its previous Jan. low record of 10c.
- Santacruz recorded its coldest ever Feb. on 6th. when it touched 9.4c.
- Santacruz beat the same 2 day old record on 8th. when the temperature fell to 8.5c.
- Colaba had its coldest Feb. ever on 9th. with the temperature at 11.8c. ( The coldest ever at Colaba was 11.7c on Jan 22., 1962.)
- Hot and muggy Mimbai had 24 days of avg. temperature of 19c, while for these same 24 days the normal avg. temperature should be 24c. (diagram).
- Scruz also had  its coldest day, with the day at 22.3c on 7th Feb 2008. Colaba was 23.1c on 8th Feb 2008.
Alongwith, Gujarat and Rajasthan have experienced a cold wave , but only from 1st. Feb onwards. In Gujarat, the lowest was at Nalliya, 0.4c and Mt. Abu in Rajasthan recorded -3c.

he cold winds have crept into Gujarat, Rajasthan and north konkan from the northwesterly direction, that is from the sindh/baluchistan regions of Pakistan. As a result, that region too has experienced severe cold in the first week. Karachi has had a low 0f 5c on 8th. and 9th. Feb. Nawabshah recorded its lowest ever temperature of -3.5c on 8th.
With the moving of 2/3 W.D.s, the entire belt of hills of north India had very excessive snowfall in the first week of Feb. Temperatures too fell, and Leh had a max. of -6c and a minimum of -29c on 2nd. Feb.
With the W.D. now having moved away, very strong northwesterlies are expected to bring in cold wave conditions in the northern regions of the subcontinent from the 10th.





Mumbai gets its coldest temp in March with S’Cruz recording 13.4c on 1st March 2012 and Colaba seeing 18.4c.
Mumbai Topples its own Record for March ! 13.4c recorded on 1st March 2012.
Today, 10th March saw Mumbai S’Cruz dipping to 12.7c, another record broken in 10 days.
Today, 10th March 20112,  Colaba was at 18.0c, also lower than 1st March’s 18.4c.


One of the warmest Decembers was in 1969 when the lowest for the month was 20c (colaba).
Mumbai was the first City in India to touch 40c for the season in 1981, when the mark of 40c was recorded on 3rd March 1981.

2014: Colaba sees the driest June ever with only 55 mms in the month ( Scruz saw 87 mms).

2014:Meanwhile Scruz has recorded the Wettest July ever by gauging up 1469 mms in the month Previously highest was 1456  mms (1965).

2013: Is Mumbai in for the fastest 2000 mms ever ? Will it beat the previous record of 60 days this year ?
 

Mumbai Santa Cruz total rain 1935 mms till 26th July Morning.
 

Will this year be the earliest 2000 mm (fastest) ever ? 
The current record for the fastest 2000 mms at Santa Cruz was in 1965, when it touched 2000 mms on 30th July, in 60 days. Followed by 2005 when the total was surpassed on 31st July, in 61 days. July End Totals..scruz 1965 ;2038 mms, 2005 :2019 mms
Short this year by 65 mms and 4 days to go to beat the record for fastest ever 2000 mms !No, in 2013, t happened on 1st August !
Colaba, just for the records, has crossed 2000 mms by July 3 times. In 1886, 1907 and 1991. But, we are still way behind for this station to cross 2000 mms by July end.

Mumbai had rain and thunder on 9th. March 2006 in the morning from 5.30 a.m. At around

7.30 a.m. HAIL WAS REPORTED FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. HAIL WAS

REPORTED FROM SUBURBS AND FROM KEMPS CORNER AND PEDDER ROAD.

 Mumbai on 26th July 2005: Actual rainall: 1.30-2.30=100mms, 2.30-3.30=190 mms, 3.30-4.30=100 mms, 4.30-5.30=100 mms, 5.30-6.30 =100 mms...all continuous..approx 100mms  +_ 5 mms.

Readings at 26th July At Scruz: 08.30 am-11.30 am= 19.3 mms, 11.30am -14.30 = 400.1 

mms, 14.30 pm-17.30 pm = 667.7  , 17.30 pm -20.30 pm = 768.8 mms, 20.30 pm --23.30 

pm = 885 mms,  23.30 pm --02.30am= 896 mms , 05.30 am- 08.30 am = 944.2 mms

Cyclones to Hit Mumbai:    
As per my records, and information, 3 cyclones have actually struck, and hit right into Mumbai..head on !
~1882 – More than 100,000 inhabitants of Bombay were killed when a cyclone in the Arabian Sea pushed massive waves into the harbor.No details available with Vagaries. If any details are procurable, please send for all to read.
1st June, 1855 cyclone in Bombay -boats destroyed at Appollo Bunder [lower picture]. An article titled “Cyclone in Bombay”, apperead in the “Illustrated London News”dated 24th June 1885. The picture also shows the article.
